Curling Roles

Sweep Smart, Slide Strong, Play Ready

Curling Roles

In curling, each team is made up of four players, and every position plays a unique and important role. From setting up the first shots to making the final, game-changing plays, each curler has specific responsibilities that contribute to the team’s overall strategy and success. Understanding the roles of the lead, second, third (or vice-skip), and skip helps new players learn the flow of the game and appreciate the teamwork involved in every end.

Lead

The lead throws the first two stones of each end and sets the foundation for the team’s strategy. Precision and consistency are key, as their shots often include guards or draws. After delivering their stones, the lead also sweeps for the rest of the team.

Second

The second throws the third and fourth stones. They often play takeouts or setup shots, depending on the strategy. Strong sweeping and solid shot-making skills make the second a key contributor throughout the end.

Third (Vice -Skip)

The third throws the fifth and sixth stones and supports the skip with strategy. They hold the broom for the skip’s shots and often discuss tactics. The third needs a strong all-around game and a good understanding of shot selection.

Skip

The skip is the team captain and strategist. They call the shots for every play and throw the final two stones of each end, which are often the most crucial. A skip needs sharp decision-making, precise shot execution, and the ability to read the ice.
